The Body Mass Index is an index used to assess the health risks associated with overweight or thinness.
Because weight alone is not enough to diagnose obesity, overweight or excessive thinness: it is not the same thing as doing 90 kilos if you are 1m50 or 1m 90.
How to calculate the BMI?
The body mass index is calculated by dividing weight by height squared. The World Health Organization has defined this index as the standard for identifying weight problems.
Through studies, thresholds were then established to assess risk areas, including cardiovascular disease.
BMI is a reliable method for adult women and men aged 18 to 65, but cannot be used as-is for pregnant or nursing women, seniors, endurance athletes, or very muscular people.
The interpretation of BMI is done according to the criteria defined by the World Health Organization
BMI (kg/m²) | Interpretation (based on WHO) |
---|---|
16.5 to 18.5 | Lean |
18.5 to 25 | Normal build |
25 to 30 | Overweight |
30 to 35 | Moderate obesity |
35 to 40 | Severe obesity |
more than 40 | morbid or massive obesity |
Interpretation of your BMI
YOUR BMI IS TOO LOW: YOU ARE IN A LEAN SITUATION
YOUR BMI IS NORMAL:
If your BMI is between 18.5 and 25, you are of normal build, that is, you are neither overweight nor lean. Continue to eat balanced, exercise regularly: this healthy lifestyle is a guarantee of good health, not to mention the notion of pleasure of course!
YOUR BMI IS TOO HIGH: YOU ARE OVERWEIGHT
If your BMI is above 25, you are overweight. Your doctor will certainly recommend you to lose weight to return to "normal" weight. Once your program is established with him, you can consult our "Diet" file to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way.
